Market research is very important with today's market. In the past, there seem to always be plenty of work so very little attention was being paid to the direction of the construction market. The style of market we will be dealing with for some time is full of ups and downs. We are seeing down time when the market is usually busy and possible up times when the market is suppose to slow. A good way to put this is to compare it to running water which we had in the past and slow drips of water we have today. The drips are difficult to predict now and we could be spending lots of money trying to figure out when the drip will drop.
Maybe you have been doing your own research or paying someone else to keep an eye on it. Now imagine every company doing this the the vast amount of resources being wasted overall. Why not just outsource the research so everyone can use the information and at the same time help out your customers or affiliated companies.
The data I gather comes from the US Census Bureau, but you can spend much time trying to put all together. Basically I can do this for you and post the information on this page for everyone to keep an eye on. It does not matter who you are because everyone in the construction industry needs this kind of information.
I can do market research for anywhere in the US.
Understand the data
There is no reason to make this complicated. All you need really is to see the trend and how to understand it's direction. Construction permits are normally gotten ahead of time in most cases and it can demonstrate when the building activity will hit depending on what part of the building process you come in. Therefore, excavating and block work will see the activity the soonest starting roughly a month after the permits, framing can see the activity one to two months and finishing will see the activity most likely two to three months later.
It very handy to compare the figures to last year's numbers or the previous years numbers , then take that percentage and put it against your numbers and that how much you can expect. It will also help you compare to see if your gaining or losing market share in an area. So the actual amount of permits don't matter, only what it compares in 2007 or 2006. I will also add any comments to the research of any odd activity I find while packaging the numbers so there easy to understand.
